Designed for Miranda Congregational Church, this flyer was distributed around the neighbourhood before the annual Christmas carols service. The key message of the night followed the idea of the star which pointed people towards Jesus, and what that means, hence the theme ‘Star of Wonder’. The flyer aims to draw in a crowd from around the area of those who were looking to hear more about the Lord, aiming to appeal to people who don’t necessarily attend church every Sunday.
This was the first carols event planned and co-ordinated at Miranda Congregational church, and the aim of the night was simple: welcome new people using the familiarity of Christmas, and sharing festivities through song, in order to create a connection and share the Good News about Jesus. A key element to this event involved ensuring that the message was accessible to people of all ages, and ensuring we had elements in the service which catered specifically to the younger children who also took part in the service singing a few songs for the congregation.
A really encouraging element of the night that came about as a result of ensuring the service was as accessible as possible for people of all backgrounds, is that the Children were listening and interacting with the time slot reserved for the main sermon. Pastor Heath Smith engaged the children using simple language and metaphor while still preaching a message that was not patronising the adults in attendance.
One of the exciting things about a a Carols events is that there is a chance to experiment and emphasise the musical elements of a service. To do this, we introduced a few different musical styles to create variation throughout the night, mixing up sets with clarinets, saxophones, and violin. An original arrangement was written for our hero song of the night ‘We Three Kings’ in order to bring something new to a classic piece of Christmas Music.
